Our Top 5 Favorite Movies for the Holiday Season
The holidays are here folks, and between the freezing cold weather and the throngs of elbow-throwing last-minute holiday shoppers, we’re content to enjoy the season from the comfort of our couches. And if you’re like us, you’ll need something to throw on the TV during these cold days (aside from the looping Yule Log or another session of A Charlie Brown Christmas).
Here are a few other holiday titles that you and your family should check out:
Jingle All The Way
Jingle All The Way features America’s favorite bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The hero’s plight in this film is one we can all sympathize with: Trying to find the hottest Christmas toy on the market just days before the presents are unwrapped. With a great supporting cast (Phil Hartman of SNL fame and Sinbad of…well, Sinbad fame), Jingle All The Way breaks through its apparent glorification of holiday materialism and digs deep into what truly matters during the holidays.
A Rugrats Chanukah
The season of Chanukah (or Hanukkah) isn’t well represented in the film department, but that doesn’t mean that those interested in the Jewish holiday have nothing to watch.
Surprisingly, A Rugrats Chanukah does justice to the season better than almost any other telling with its Chanukah-themed episode, first airing in 1996. The titular Rugrats go through a series of misunderstandings and misadventures as they learn about their culture, the holiday, and what it means to be Jewish. It’s definitely worth a watch, particularly for younger kids.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Anyone who hasn’t seen this Christmas masterpiece is definitely missing out.
Directed by the iconic Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a unique story that blends Christmas cheer with the dark fantasy of Halloween. In this story, the residents of “Halloween Town” and their leader, Jack Skellington, get a glimpse outside their trick-or-treating world to experience something entirely new: snowfall, reindeer, presents, and Saint Nick himself. For those interested in an animated Christmas story with a twist, this one’s a must-see.
A Christmas Carol
No Christmas movie list is complete with A Christmas Carol.
Widely considered the definitive telling of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday novel, A Christmas Carol has all the hallmarks of a great holiday story — generosity, warmth, and a lesson of thankfulness too powerful for even Ebenezer Scrooge to ignore. Don’t let its age fool you; this one is timeless.
The Santa Clause
If you’re a fan of the goofy slapstick and over-the-top shenanigans that characterized Tim Allen’s comedic career, you’ve likely seen this one already.
If you haven’t, it’s certainly worth a watch this time of year. The Santa Clause examines a most unlikely scenario: A down-on-his-luck dad taking up the mantle of Santa Claus himself. While packed with humor and witty writing, the film’s message and the heartwarming ending will surely put you in the Christmas spirit… as long as you avoid its awful sequels
And with that, you have our list of our favorite weird, wacky, and wonderful holiday movies. Grab a friend or family member and check out one of these classics — they’ll be sure to put a smile on your face. Have a happy holiday, everyone!
